So You’re in a Pit? What Now?

I Will Always Cling to You

I wrote a song, “I Will Always Cling to You,” inspired by a trial I endured.

When I say trial, I mean it. Profound discouragement was what I was experiencing.

I felt like I was in a pit, so I did what I usually do: I threw a fit.

My fit involved asking God a barrage of questions: “Why do I have to go through this?” “Why is this happening right now?” “Why is there seemingly no end to this?” When I felt ignored, I topped it off with, “God, are You even listening to me?”

A Moment of Optimism

However, after my fit was over, I had a moment of optimism. “Wait,” I thought, “when we are in a pit, that is when God delivers us, right?” Psalm 40:2 says, “He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure.”

Suddenly, I felt sure my time in the pit was nearing an end because, undoubtedly, I had hit rock bottom in this particular pit, and God would rescue me.

And that is when I discovered that pit had a pit beneath it.

So, of course, I threw another fit.

After that pit-beneath-the-pit-fit, I sensed God asking me if I would continue throwing useless fits or if I would trust Him when I was discouraged, disheartened, and even downright depressed.

To say I didn’t consider continuing with the fits would be a lie.

Drawing a Line

Instead, I decided to draw a line and proclaim that come what may, it won’t shake my faith. No matter what the enemy tries to throw in my path, I will cling to the LORD and trust His plan. I said it out loud, sang it out loud, and vowed that would be my approach when I was in my next pit.

The chorus of “I Will Always Cling to You” declares: “I will always sing to You. I will always cling to You. No matter what the road ahead might bring, I want to trust You through everything. No matter how the enemy tries to hurt me, the truth is You’ve already won the victory. Come what may – it won’t shake my faith. I will always cling to You.”

I have yet to succeed with that bold claim of always clinging and trusting, but I will keep striving with God’s help. He has faithfully proven He knows what He is doing and is worthy of trust.

As the song says, God already won the victory over anything that we are struggling with: discouragement, depression, anxiety, addiction. You name it, He has defeated it. So, as we temporarily dwell in a pit, or in a pit beneath a pit, waiting for His victory to be reflected in our present circumstances, we are faced with the decision of whether or not to cling to and trust in the promises of the LORD.

What Now?

When circumstances look desperate, cling desperately. When a pit gets deeper, trust deeper. Tell the enemy that he has no power over your situation and that you know God has everything under control. Persevere in prayer. Let’s cling to what we know, not what we feel. Let’s trust in His promises, not our emotions. Clinging and trusting puts us in a prime position to hear God’s voice as He leads us out of the pit.

When we remember that our Heavenly Father’s objectives are to bring us closer to Him and make us more like Him, we can be confident that He uses all circumstances in our lives to accomplish those goals. There is a divine purpose in those pits.
