To Make Me What I Need to Be
I vaguely recall my childhood church holding “junior choir” rehearsals. After school, a group of us would practice a few songs in preparation for upcoming church services. I don’t recall how often we met or how long the rehearsals lasted. I also don’t remember all the people involved. But what I do remember is one song in particular: “He’s Still Workin’ Me.” The chorus goes like this: He′s still workin’ on me, to make me what I need to be. It took him just a week to make the moon and stars, the sun and the earth, and Jupiter and Mars. How loving and patient He must be ’cause He′s still workin’ on me. https://youtu.be/cILJO3gO7h4?si=PIAwuSR8WuZaoEtC
The lyrics, rhythm, and melody of that song have stuck with me all these years. Lately, it has been playing practically nonstop in my mind because of a Bible verse in Philippians. “And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” Philippians 1:6. Friend, God’s not done with us.
Potential
Isn’t it reassuring to know that He’s still working on us? Isn’t it a blessing that He is currently transforming our hearts to be more like Jesus? When someone sees potential in us, it restores our hope and encourages us greatly. When it’s God who sees potential in us, wow, talk about next level of hope and encouragement! It is a reason to get up in the morning. It is a reason not to give up on ourselves. And it is a reason to scale those proverbial walls when we are tempted to bail.
God does not see us as a finished project. Instead, He relentlessly pursues us to help us reach our potential in Him and be more like Jesus.
Workin’ On Us in the Everyday
Sometimes He works on us through routine, everyday events, such as conversations we have, truths we read, or things we hear. Sometimes He shows up in miraculous ways, such as providing sudden answers to prayer or an unexpected person showing up at just the right time. No matter how He chooses to intervene, it’s always with the intent of bringing us closer to Him. “He’s still workin’ on me, to make me what I need to be.”
Workin’ On Us Through Trials
We can’t ignore the fact that from time to time, God works on us by allowing trials into our lives. However, when we choose to focus on Him and His goodness instead of our trials, our perspective changes dramatically. We open our eyes to how He is revealing precious information about His character, faithfulness, and love in the midst of the trial. For instance, when our struggle is loneliness, He reminds us that He is all we need and provides us with the strength and comfort we need. And when we are attacked, He promises to be our defender.
No matter what type of trial we face, He is there helping us handle it and become more like Jesus. “He’s still workin’ on me, to make me what I need to be.”
If we try to rush or sidestep the trials God allows in our lives, we are, in essence, saying, “God, let’s skip this heart transformation process – I’m already Christ-like enough.” And we know none of us are at that point yet! If we can shift our mindset from “woe is me,” to asking Him what He is teaching us, He will equip us to handle the trial.
It’s a Process – Let’s Be Ready
Isn’t it amazing to know that it’s a Biblical fact that God does not give up on us – that He’s still workin’ on us? He never sees us as hopeless cases. He sees us as people who are in the process of becoming who He created us to be. “He’s still workin’ on me, to make me what I need to be.”
Friend, let’s be attentive, alert, and make ourselves available to God, because He’s still workin’ on us!
