A Different Miracle

“A Different Miracle,” is a song I wrote in honor of my niece, Rachel, and her family. Rachel, her husband, Shawn, and their three beautiful daughters live in Kansas. Amelia is 4, Laurel will be 3 in July, and Caroline is one-and-a-half. To say that their household is busy is an understatement. To say it is entertaining and that they could be one of the most highly-watched reality TV programs (based on personal experience and Facebook videos) is also an understatement. 😂

Before Laurel (Lolo) was born, Rachel and Shawn were made aware of potential challenges she would be born with. The range and extent of the struggles she will continue to endure is a mystery, but they, as a family, face them head-on and are grateful for every moment they get to experience with her. As Rachel says, “we’re so happy watching her enjoy life and love her sisters.” Rachel and Shawn are without a doubt her greatest cheerleaders, advocates, nurturers, and protectors, and all who know them are inspired by them.

This song, “A Different Miracle,” came about because of a conversation I had with my sister, Vicki, Rachel’s mom. We were talking about prayer for a miracle of healing in regard to Lolo’s situation. I remember we discussed the fact that there ARE miracles happening; not the miracle of healing that many of us have asked for…BUT…God’s presence has been felt and seen in miraculous ways…

The way in which Rachel and Shawn so naturally parent with so much grace and maturity: miracle. The compassion and tenderheartedness continually being developed and displayed in the lives of Caroline and Amelia: miracle. The ways in which their community and family and friends have stepped in and supported them: miracle. Laurel’s responses to her sisters, her parents, and her nurses, etc.: miracle. Laurel’s bright, beautiful smile: miracle.

Precious Lolo affects people in miraculous ways.

Without a doubt, God still performs miracles, and whether or not they are the miracles we specifically ask for…They. Are. Awe-inspiring.

I pray the words to this song coupled with Rachel’s words interspersed throughout will touch you.

A Different Miracle

How many times did He hear our voices pleading?

Can’t say we’ve ever asked with such passion before.

Thought we had our path marked out;

Thought we knew where He was leading.

But then He brought us to an unexpected door.

We’re in an unfamiliar place desperate for His wisdom and His grace.

Now He’s opening our eyes. We continue to see

The many unasked-for miracles He’s granted so generously.

He hears every prayer we lift to Him, and we know He cares.

Every road He leads us down – He’s faithful to be there.

We know He heard our heartfelt cry, so there were times we wondered why

He responded to our request in a way we did not expect.

Sometimes God answers our prayers with a different miracle.

This is uncharted territory, but He says He’ll guide us.

We’re counting our blessings knowing there is more in store.

As we press forward, we continue to focus

On the miracles we hadn’t seen before.
